Yeah, I'd have to see the science on that one

Courtesy NBC News:

"A Republican Senate nominee found himself in hot water on Sunday for suggesting that instances of "legitimate rape" rarely results in pregnancy.

Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican who's locked in a hard-fought campaign in Missouri to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, was answering a question regarding his position on abortion rights in instances when a woman is a victim of rape.

"People always want to make it into one of those things — well, how do you slice this particularly tough ethical question," Akin said in an interview on KTVI-TV, video of which was circulated by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said. "

Yeah, that's right. My body can somehow differentiate between "legitimate rape" and other sex, and decide whether I get pregnant or not.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH oh wait that's not funny.

p.s. Thank you for your condolences. It means a lot.

Has anyone asked this asshat what he thinks constitutes "legitimate rape"? It appears that he thinks there are some circumstances in which non-consensual violent sexual attacks are ok, if you just look at from a certain angle.

Ha, bridgett, I'm pretty sure this guy considers all rape "legitimate". As in, "she asked for it."

I imagine he's implying that there are women who've gotten pregnant and claimed it was rape when it really wasn't. And while I'm sure this does happen on occasion, it's far more likely that he's generally in favor of blaming the victim. Like you said, she asked for it.

And with his statements about the female body (which he is apparently an expert on), he now has even more reason to blame the victim. If she got pregnant, then it wasn't rape. She wasn't trying hard enough to stop it.

Furthermore, some actual statistics say that approximately 5% of rape instances result in pregnancy (I think that's about 30,000+ per year). Plus, since rape is commonly unreported, that number could easily be higher. Bottom line--he's a disgusting and plain ol' stupid jerk.

What I keep coming back to is that "from what I understand from doctors" part. Really? Doctors told him that? Because somehow I really, really doubt that, which means he's just making up bullshit to support his position.

And if doctors really DID tell him that, I want him to supply the names of the doctors, so that they can be called before the AMA to get their medical licenses revoked.

Because there's no excuse for this bullshit. None.

My personal opinion is that there are assholes all over the place and party affiliation does not make you better or worse.

Heard this guy defending it on talk radio this afternoon and he should be shot in the ass with some buckshot, not a real smart guy.

fmcetc., yep, the dipshits are everywhere. Although I don't hear about too many flat-out f*cktards in the Democratic party. Maybe they're better at hiding them out in the shed.

Although, well, hell, I know a lot of people for whom the statement "let's provide health insurance for everybody" is crazy-ass insanity, so what the hell do I know.
