Movie Review - "Mamma Mia"

Mamma mia, indeed. What a piece of shit. I mean, I love Abba just as much as the next person, and that's why I wanted to see this movie. For some reason, I thought that the actors would be lip-synching to actual Abba recordings, which would have been awesome. Instead, the actors were doing their own singing (or someone was singing for them, not sure), and it was horrible. Awful. A desecration of Abba, if you will.

And please understand, I love musicals. West Side Story? A classic. As a little kid, I was thrilled when they'd show The Sound Of Music on tv. And "1776" is one of my favorite movies ever.

Truthfully, I can't really review Mamma Mia, because I could only tolerate about twenty minutes before I had to pop out the DVD. It was that, or shit and go blind, because this was one stinker of a movie.

I saw it on Broadway once and then saw the movie over Christmas break down at my mom's. The movie really suffers by comparison to the theatrical experience, but I agree that even on its own terms, it isn't very good. The scenery is great, the lead girl is suitably impractically ingenue-ish, but...well, yeah. Pierce Brosnan can't sing. Meryl Streep can sing, but it's not a great voice (more like the surprise you'd register watching a dog answering the telephone...hey, lookie there, pretty good for a dog!). And who thought of casting the chief evil bastard from Ronin (the Swedish guy) as the jovial thrill-seeking happy-go-lucky dad? I kept waiting for him to murder somebody in a cold contemptuous fit of impatience.

At least you turned it off. I will never get those two hours back.

Oh, and completely unrelated -- I got your OTHER Christmas card (the one you sent on the 20th) today. I think my postman is hording mail when he gets behind and then just redistributes it when he gets caught back up again. Is that possible?

Yeah, at least I only lost twenty minutes!

And I totally think your mailman is hoarding the mail - you read about that happening every once in a while! If I were (was?) you, I'd have anything important sent to the office. ;)

Wow, what a violent reaction! I haven't seen it and have no desire to, especially after this post. My mom, on the other hand, got the DVD for Christmas. The apple sometimes does fall far from the tree.

My word verification is "rexhabis." It's a Greek tragedy.

I know that a lot of people enjoyed it; I just thought it stank.

And I had no idea that "rexhabis" was a Greek tragedy. I would have guessed dinosaur house .......
