Yesterday morning I sent my boss an email, the sole content of which was a link to the Wikipedia entry for Administrative Professionals Day.
Results?
A card, some cash, and a beautiful blue iris to plant in my garden.

With my boss, as with most engineers, "subtle" gets you jack sh*t. If I have to hit him upside the head with a baseball bat, I'll do so.
