I need to send some long-distance flowers next week. I used FTD the last time and got hosed. Can anybody recommend a good long-distance florist? Is Teleflora any good? How about 1-800-flowers?

Why pay Teleflora, 1800 or FTD a big service fee and a big fat commission? They do not have any flowers, floral designers or delivery people! They do not even look at your order. It is automatically processed by a computer. All they do is keep a big part of the order and send it to a local florist! Why not do that yourself? Google or any SE will give you the needed info Just type " florist city state" into the search bar and voila! Or contact your local florist in your city, someone you can trust, and let them send the order for you. They know who is best in another city!

I've put together on article on how to get the best deal when ordering flowers online. This comes from researching the topic quite a bit - florists definitely have opinions about this! I've compiled another page with interesting facts about ordering flowers that has more info on seasonal flowers and the major florist networks themselves. Personally, among the big networks, I like Teleflora. Organic Bouquet is very good too, and certainly more conscientious. Good look!
As Ken said, I usually just find a local florist. They know what they've got in the cooler and a brief phone call can usually get the person you're buying for a much nicer bunch of flowers for the same price you would have paid FTD.
Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely go with a local florist.
