Crossroads
This afternoon at work, my boss, while speaking to a friend of his within my hearing in the office, referred to a black man as the n-word. Again. And I walked out. Again.
But I can't keep doing this. I can't keep working for this racist asshole. I think it's time to go back to school. I'll have to work at the same time, obvs, but I can do that. Time to get a degree under my belt, time to move on. I can't work for this dinosaur anymore. I could keep doing what I'm doing now (office admin), but I've been wanting to go to college forever, so it might as well be now.
On the bright side, my anger led to some crazy creative stuff this afternoon. I left the office, and I was so pissed off, and I'm, like, I MUST MAKE SOMETHING PRETTY! I took a cheap old picture frame and Rockyfied it, and then I pulled a switchplate off the wall and modpodged a page from a bird book onto it, and then I busted out the Jillian and did a workout because I still needed to blow off some steam.
Oh, man. Time to fish or cut bait. Career advice welcome.

I think you mentioned when I was going through one of my many career crises that you thought horticulture sounded interesting. Lots of people are making a living in environment-related careers from landscape design and city planning to conservation. Your appreciation for nature would lead to me to believe you'd have an aptitude for that. It also depends on the job market in your area if you plan to stay local.
The idea of your quitting and going to college is really exciting. For most people who wish that, it's not a possibility. The alternative is probably that you will finish your working life with great resentment and regret that you never changed things. But, let's do this!!! You'll wow the other students with your hippie dress(es)! And, like Kate said, nature or wildlife conservation or the like sounds so perfect!
Picture your readers with cheerleader outfits (modest, of course) with a giant R on the sweaters!! Yes!!!

Kate and Ginny, yes, an outdoor career would be awesome, although I'd probably need more education than I can afford to get a viable job in the field. But it sounds like fun - thanks! And Ginny, get right to work on those cheerleader outfits, would ya? :)
I actually just got off the phone with an advisor at the local community college. She is going to talk some people around campus and get the ball rolling for me there. I will be going in to speak with a career advisor and someone in the financial aid dept. Turns out there are special programs available for people who are old as dirt. Ha.
Of course, I will still need to work while going to school (dammit), but there are lots of on-line and evening courses available. And a lot will depend on what financial aid is available, but screw it. I'll never know what's out there if I never try. Life ain't short - it's long. I might as well venture forth.
