The Closing Dress

So! A few weeks ago, I pulled a dress out of my closet. It's one that I only wear a couple of times a year, mainly because it's black (which says fall/winter) but also short and sleeveless (hello spring/summer).

I figured it was okay for a warm day in October, so there you go.

Oh! And it's The Closing Dress.

It's the dress I wore the day I bought my house, July 30, 2009. And every time I pull it out of the closet, I think of that day.

It's not the only item of clothing I own that I associate with one specific event. I have an old flannel shirt of my dad's that I always wear when I'm putting up/taking down the Christmas tree. And, of course, there are the lawn-mowing clothes - ratty old clothes that I wear when I'm mowing. And I have a pair of socks that I wore when ... when ... well, that's a post for another day.

So! Do you have a Closing Dress? An article of clothing that you associate with one day? (Other than your wedding gown, obv.) I hope I'm not alone, here.

Gosh, you know, I really had to think about this one. I have the typical yard work clothes, a couple of cardigans that I wear around the house when I'm feeling a bit under the weather and chilly, but....I don't think I have any thing that's linked to a memory or event.

I think that's so sweet though about your dad's shirt. Hugs.

I have a "wedding" dress, not my wedding dress but a dress I wear to almost all weddings I go to, because I am cheap and do not want to invest in more than one fancy dress! And after that, I have chicken coop cleaning clothes--ratty jeans and my Iowa t-shirt from library school. Ummm, and I think that's it!

Well, there's the pants and shirt I wear to paint walls, and a few t-shirts commemorating events. But the one thing that grips me every time I see it in the closet is a silvery gray jacket I wore on the first (and absolutely amazing) unchaperoned date with The Man. I have a black skirt and red jacket that always remind me of my PT school interview. And when I need a hug I wear my brother's fraternity shirt.

Hmm, I don't have any clothes like that. I wonder why I don't?

I have a scarf and corduroy jacket that I bought at Eddie Bauer (big bucks for me) when I got hired to teach for the first time. I wear the scarf all the time and it makes me feel all teachery. The jacket isn't very practical, but I don't want to part with it.

Now that I think of it, I've got a bracelet that my mom gave me years ago that I never wear - I just carry it around in my purse. For some reason, it reminds me of how she was before the Alzheimer's hit.

Funny how things can remind us of other things ...

Well firstly, no I don't have any dresses, and no I don't tend to connect any clothes with a specific occasion.

Now I wish I did!

Ha, LL, your entire wardrobe is a special occasion! :)
