Just sloggin' along
I had my first in-person interview yesterday, with a local medical facility. I think I would like the position just fine, but it would involve three 12-hour shifts a week, plus one 4-hour shift, which ... uck. I dunno - unless it pays really well, I'll probably give it a pass.
I've got two interviews tomorrow, plus the bank interview on Friday. I filed for partial unemployment, which - maaaaan, they do NOT make it easy to collect unemployment in this state. After struggling with the on-line application and then finally calling the claims center (fun!), I THINK I'm all set for partial unemployment, except it's going to take at least four weeks to start collecting, and then I'll only be eligible for one day of benefits a week, and heaven forfend you screw up any of the paperwork. GOD.
I continue to apply for other jobs as they pop up on Indeed and the Labor Dept. website. I did two more this morning.
I attended a registration seminar for on-line learning through the local job service yesterday, and as soon as I get my password, I'll be able to take some software refresher courses, which will come in handy.
PLUS I'm trapping cats tonight for spay/neuter appointments in the morning, AND Ponyboy's got a routine vet appointment tomorrow, AND I'm still working part-time, now trying to compress a 40-hour workweek down into 20 hours.
This stuff is exhausting, yo.

Any positions at the university in Binghamton?
Just between you and me, SUNY-B does not have a great reputation when it comes to treatment of clerical employees. I'm probably going to steer clear for now.
"Just between you and me" ... and the internet :) Does BCC have the same reputation? I loved teaching there; they treated their adjuncts better than I was treated everywhere else I've taught part-time. I can't speak for the admin positions, though. They might offer tuition waivers if you wanted to take classes, which is a nice perk of working for a college.
Being under-employed/unemployed is way more tiring than just having a regular job in my opinion. Searching is tiring. Searching and not finding what you want is disappointing and can sometimes lead to despair. Searching and being insulted by the offers you get is demoralizing. Been there, done that--still doing it? I sincerely wish you all the best in your job hunt, and don't forget to take care of yourself.
Kate, BCC is better, and as a result they rarely have admin openings. The job I interviewed at yesterday has tuition reimbursement, as does one of the ones I'm interviewing for tomorrow.
Thanks for your kind words - it gets kind of overwhelming at times, and of course the little things don't stop piling on. A broken coffeemaker almost had me in tears this morning - sheesh. I'm lucky in that there are a LOT of openings in my field right now - I just have to be patient and find the right one. One thing I keep telling myself is that just because I've been working at my current job FOREVER, it doesn't mean that I have to stay in my next job that long - I can leave after a year or two if it's not the right fit.
It's all finding the right balance - salary, benefits, hours - and, of course, a job that won't drive me CRAZY and yet will let me pay the bills. :)
It sounds like you are trying to do your same job in half the time. Forgive me if I misunderstood BUT do not do that! Your employer made a business decision that they only need half of what you do. Honor that decision. Choose the most important half and do that or let them choose. But don't even try to do your old job.
Portia, I WAS trying to do the job in half the time - that lasted for about two days, until I realized there was NO WAY that was sustainable, and now I just do what I can do. But it still means being really busy when I'm there. Because I am the sole admin support person, there are definitely things that aren't getting done. OH WELL. :) The boss made the call, and he's gotta live with it.
Yes, I agree with Portia. In my old job, which was 24/7 until I demanded no nights and weekends on call, I was put on a no O/T with prior approval status. All that meant was an angry boss because he felt I should work 30 minutes or so for free. Nope, people should realize they get what they pay for. Do you know why he thought this was a great idea?
Why he thought it was a great idea? Why, to save him money, of course. He's got two houses and three cars to keep up, after all. *scowl*
I'm glad you stopped trying to fit 40hrs of work in 20 hours. That's just not right. You really should have a conversation and spell out the priorities / job description that is commensurate with your new pay
Tails, I have had a daaaaaaay ... On the one hand, a good reference from this guy could be very beneficial. On the other hand, I'm not gonna kill myself to get it. Sheesh.
