I was born in 1962; you do the math. (See also: I'm too lazy to remember to update this thing regularly.) I bought my first house in the summer of 2009; I share it with four cats and with the memories of The Runt and Little Girl, who both passed away in 2011. Rocky, the cat for whom this blog was named, passed away in 2008; I miss them all. I wish I lived somewhere where the winters weren't eight months long; other than that, life is good.
According to Dr. Google, the origins are Japanese. It is also known as the "Chinese money cat", as they are popular with Chinese merchants. Maneki-neko means "beckoning cat" in Japanese.
I had to find and bring one home to Punkin Head when we lived in Shanghai. Very difficult to find a nice one in China for some reason. They were not plentiful.
I like to imagine a newly-hired domestic worker showing up at your house, seeing ALL the knick-knacks to dust, and beating a hasty retreat, claiming urgent business elsewhere.
This cat is very famous and popular in Japan. People have a strong belief that it will bring luck, wealth and happiness. Every store in Japan and China has this cat in their storefront. More about the cat can be found here: https://manekicats.com/

Maneki-neko sounds very Japanese to me...are you sure it isn't a Japanese cat?? Just curious.

Hmmm, fmc, I guess that would belie Wikipedia's claim that they're "popular with Chinese merchants."
I picked up mine in Ithaca.

Knick-knacks? KNICK-KNACKS?! These are precious artifacts!
Ha. I feel for whoever has to clean out the place after I die. They'd better rent the LARGE dumpster.
