State! Fair!

Yes, back pain or no back pain, there was no way in HELL I was going to miss the Fair.  So I grabbed a partner in crime and off we went.  This is my peril pal Laurie:

The first surprise came when we got to the gate and discovered they were letting everyone in for FREE for the first hour.  Yippee!

We saw the Birds of Prey show:

The same girl pictured doing the bird show was ALSO doing the wild cat show that we saw later on.  She was a busy woman!

We admired the cool buildings:

Watched the contest judging:

and struck silly poses with giant farm animals:

(yes, I do wear a fanny pack.  When I go to the Fair, I wear a fanny pack.  SHUT IT. ha)

Check out the horns on THIS fella:

I LOVE the quilt contest.  This quilt was all cats:

The sand sculpture was a work in progress:

We watched the wild cat show, which was interesting because all of the animals in it had been rescued from untenable conditions.  The Hawk Creek Wildlife Center was using the animals to get the word out about helping the ones still in the wild.  Someone had been trying to keep this serval as a housepet - it didn't go well.  Now it lives in a wild animal sanctuary with several serval buddies.

All in all, it was a great day at the Fair, and I might even go back again if my back holds up!  Good times.

"Several serval".........You were waiting to use that one!

Great pictures. Glad you went.

Is Laurie the individual who was stalking you in her kayak once??????

I miss real country fairs. Around here they're just big carnivals. The cattle with huge horns are Ankole-Watusi, from east Africa.

Those big horns are air conditioners. They are filled with blood vessels, to cool the beasties. Sorta like the enormous ears on African elephants.

Fanny packs are great. I wore one to work everday in the assembly plants. On the side of course. Looks fun there.

You didn't say what you two ATE there. My grandson pointed out about fair food: "Everything is 'on a stick' ".

Ginny, yep, Laurie's the kayak one. And as far as food goes, I wanted a Cuban sandwich, but the stand selling them said the pork for it had to be slow-cooked and wasn't ready yet, which, okay, I guess they didn't have enough notice that they were going to be AT THE STATE FAIR, don't get me started, ha, and Laurie wanted souvlaki (sp?) but all she could find is lamb, and she wanted beef, and holy F*CK I guess we're just a couple of picky eaters, but in the end we had burgers and fries and called it good. We never did do any stick food, but the Fair's there for another several days and we might go back, so there's still time. WHEW.

And Silk, I wondered why the horns were so big! Thanks for the info.

and fmc, yep, I ain't gonna apologize for the fanny pack. Beats hauling a handbag around all day.

nothing wrong with a fanny pack :)

and I am so with you on the 'not being ready' comment.. maybe they had a malfunction?

Fair season is just starting up around here but it will be a while until it gets to me.

Tails, someday when I hit the lottery and am a lady of leisure (SNORT), I am going to hit every state fair in the country. Some day.

And there is something to be said for fairs that are held when the weather is a little cooler. :)
